On quite a few occasions, in my regular walks with my wife, I stumbled over uneven paths and potholes. Thank God that May was next to me and held my hand before I could fall and injure myself. At times we stumble and muddle through life. The psalmist says “the LORD makes firm the steps of the one who delights in him; though he may stumble, he will not fall, for the LORD upholds him with his hand.” – Psalm 37:23-24
Likewise I was close to May in my walks with her, the key is to stay close to the Lord and hold on to him when we stumble. As children of God, the bigger danger in our relationship with the Father is not in the stumbling but in not returning to Him when we stumble. In the parable of the prodigal son, while it was painful to see his son stumbling through life, it was even more heartwrenching to the father had his son not return home. But thank God, the prodigal eventually came to his senses.
As the saying goes, “A man is not measured by how many times he stumbles but how many times he gets back up.” Let’s remember that our loving heavenly Father longs for us to get back up and return to him in moments of stumbling.
